Newborn Photos with a Toddler? We Got This (Seriously, I Do!) { Newborn Photographer, San Rafael CA }

Okay, parents of multiples (or soon-to-be multiples!), let's talk. You're dreaming of those perfect, squishy newborn photos, but a tiny voice in your head (possibly yelling from the next room) is whispering, "But what about the toddler?!" Or the older sibling. Or the one who just discovered they can climb the bookshelf. I hear you. I see you. And after nine years of stepping into beautiful homes just like yours for newborn sessions, I promise you, I've got you.

The thought of managing a brand-new human, a whirlwind-of-energy older child, and simultaneously looking photo-ready might feel like trying to herd a flock of glitter-covered unicorns while juggling flaming torches. It's a lot! And believe me, I've witnessed the beautiful, chaotic symphony that is life with a newborn and another little one underfoot. That's why I've honed a session flow that's not just effective, but also incredibly relaxed and flexible.

Your In-Home Newborn Session: A Sneak Peek at the (Organized) Chaos

Here's a little peek behind the curtain at how I typically roll to get those photos without anyone (especially you!) feeling overwhelmed.

Phase 1: The Whole Beautiful Fam! I usually kick things off with the – the family photo! Think cozy snuggles on your bed or relaxed moments in your living room. We find that sweet spot where everyone can easily gather. The goal here is to capture that incredible "we did it, we're a family of [insert your number here ;) ]!" joy. This is where we get those essential, frame-worthy shots of everyone together.

A joyful family moment captured on a sunlit morning, with parents and children sharing laughter and cuddles on a bed.

Phase 2: Sibling Love (and Laughter!) Once we've nailed the full family portrait, we will seamlessly transition into sibling photos. This is often a magical window where your older child is still feeling included and excited. We capture those tender moments, the curious gazes, maybe even a funny little toot from baby – because real life is the best life!

Phase 3: Parent Power (and Toddler Freedom!) Next up: Mom with kids, then Dad with kids. These are always such heartwarming shots. And guess what? By this point, your amazing older child has officially completed their "photo duties"! This is the glorious moment when they are usually free to take a well-deserved break. Snacks, screen time, a playmate – whatever makes them happiest, they've earned it!

Phase 4: Baby Bliss (and Grown-Up Chill Time) The rest, as I like to say, is gravy! This is when we focus on those dreamy solo shots of your newborn, capturing all their tiny perfection. We'll also get beautiful moments of Mom with baby, and Mom and Dad with baby.

By this stage, you can truly relax, knowing all the key family shots are safely in the bag.

The Magic of In-Home Sessions

This is precisely why in-home newborn sessions are such a game-changer! You're in your own environment, where everything you need is at your fingertips. Breaks are easy. Snack attacks are manageable. And if you have a family member or friend who can pop over to entertain the older sibling during the "baby solo" portion, even better! It truly frees you up to just be in the moment.

Trust Me, It's Going to Be Amazing

I've seen it all, from toddlers making grand exits to newborns deciding it's snack time mid-pose. And you know what? It's all part of the beautiful story we're telling. My approach is always to go with the flow, adapt to your family's rhythm, and capture authentic moments. No stress, no pressure – just genuine memories.

You've got enough on your plate welcoming a new baby. Let me handle the memories. You just focus on those snuggles.
