Editorial-inspired senior photography for Sonoma County seniors who want portraits that feel authentic, stylish, and completely their own.

From coastal cliffs to golden fields, downtown streets, and meaningful locations, I create senior portraits that capture confidence, personality, and this unforgettable season before graduation.

A Senior Experience Designed For You!

After more than 10 years photographing families throughout Sonoma County and beyond, I’ve learned one thing: the most meaningful photographs happen when people feel comfortable, confident, and completely themselves.

Since 2016, I’ve had the honor of photographing more than 1,000 families—capturing everything from tiny newborn details and growing families to the unforgettable milestone of senior year. That experience has taught me how to connect with all kinds of personalities, especially teens who may not always feel natural in front of the camera.

And I hear this all the time before a session:

“I don’t know how to pose.”

The good news? You don’t have to.

You don’t need modeling experience or to know what to do with your hands. That’s my job. I’ll guide you through every step of the experience—from planning outfits and choosing locations to giving gentle direction and creating natural moments that feel effortless.

My approach is relaxed, encouraging, and fun. We’ll laugh, move, explore, and create images that feel like you—confident, authentic, and true to this exciting season of life.

Because senior portraits aren’t just about what you look like right now. They’re about remembering who you were at this exact moment before graduation, new adventures, and the next chapter begin.

Senior Guys: Your Session Doesn't Have to Feel Awkward

Not a fan of having your picture taken? You're not alone. Most senior guys tell me they aren't sure what to expect. My goal is to keep your session relaxed, natural, and focused on who you are—whether that's sports, hobbies, a favorite location, or simply capturing this season before graduation.

The Diana Jex Senior Experience

More Than JustSenior Pictures—

An Experience You'll Remember

Your senior portrait session should feel like more than showing up, smiling for the camera, and hoping for the best. It should feel like an experience designed around who you are.

From the moment you book, I’m here to guide you through every detail—from choosing outfits and locations to helping you feel confident and comfortable in front of the camera. My goal is to create images that feel natural, elevated, and uniquely yours.

Before Your Session: Planning Every Detail

The best senior portraits start with thoughtful planning.

Together, we’ll create a session that reflects your personality, style, and the things that make you you. I’ll help with:

✨ Outfit Styling & Planning
Not sure what to wear? I’ll help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully, feel authentic to your style, and create a variety of looks throughout your session. From casual and relaxed to elevated and editorial, we’ll plan outfits that make you feel confident.

✨ Location Consultation
Whether you envision yourself walking along the Sonoma Coast, surrounded by golden fields, exploring an urban downtown setting, or somewhere meaningful to you, I’ll help choose a location that fits your personality and brings your vision to life.

✨ Session Planning
We’ll plan the timing, outfits, and flow of your session so everything feels relaxed and effortless. No rushing. No guessing. Just a fun experience where you can be fully present.

During Your Session: Relax, Have Fun & Be Yourself

Most seniors tell me they feel nervous before their session—and that’s completely normal!

You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to be a model. You just need to show up as yourself.

I’ll guide you every step of the way with:

✨ Gentle Direction
I’ll show you what to do with your hands, where to stand, and how to move so you never feel awkward or unsure.

✨ Natural Movement Prompts
The best images often happen between the poses—the laugh, the walk, the wind in your hair, the moments when your personality shines through.

✨ Confidence-Building Guidance
My goal is for you to leave your session feeling amazing. I want you to see yourself the way the people who love you see you: confident, beautiful, and completely yourself.

After Your Session: Beautiful Images to Treasure

After your session, I carefully hand-edit each image with my signature natural, timeless style.

You’ll receive a beautiful online gallery of professionally edited photographs that tell the story of this incredible season of your life.

Whether you choose to display your favorites as wall art, create an album, or simply keep these images for years to come, these photographs become a meaningful reminder of who you were at this unforgettable moment.

What Should I Wear for Senior Pictures?

Creating a Senior Portrait Wardrobe That Feels Like You

One of the most common questions I hear before a senior session is:

“What should I wear for my senior pictures?”

The answer is simple: wear what makes you feel confident, comfortable, and like the very best version of yourself.

Your senior portraits should reflect your personality—not a trend that will feel dated years from now. I love helping seniors create outfits that feel natural, stylish, and timeless while still allowing their individuality to shine.

Whether your style is classic, casual, boho, feminine, sporty, edgy, or somewhere in between, we’ll create a wardrobe that feels authentically you.

My Favorite Senior Portrait Styling Tips

✨ Choose Outfits With Movement

The most beautiful senior portraits often happen when your clothing moves with you.

Flowing dresses, skirts, oversized sweaters, linen shirts, and soft fabrics photograph beautifully because they create natural movement and dimension. A dress catching the breeze along the Sonoma Coast or a flowing skirt moving through a golden field can create those effortless, editorial moments.

✨ Mix Casual + Elevated Looks

I recommend bringing a variety of outfits that show different sides of your personality.

Elevated & Feminine

  • A beautiful dress

  • Soft textures

  • Statement earrings

  • Boots or delicate sandals

Relaxed & Authentic

  • Your favorite jeans

  • A cozy sweater

  • A vintage-inspired tee

  • Sneakers or boots

Modern & Editorial

  • Layers

  • A leather jacket

  • A structured blazer

  • A unique accessory

The goal isn't to create three completely different versions of yourself—it’s to tell the story of who you are right now.

✨ Layers Add Depth and Personality

Layers are one of my favorite ways to make senior portraits feel styled and unique.

Consider adding:

  • Denim jackets

  • Cardigans

  • Sweaters

  • Blazers

  • Hats

  • Scarves

  • Oversized button-down shirts

Layers also give you more variety during your session without needing to bring an entire new outfit.

✨ Texture Makes Photos Feel Beautiful

Textures photograph beautifully because they add visual interest without distracting from you.

Some of my favorites:

  • Lace

  • Linen

  • Knit sweaters

  • Crochet

  • Velvet

  • Embroidery

  • Flowy fabrics

  • Natural fibers

These details create a timeless, elevated look that feels beautiful years from now.

✨ Don't Forget the Details

The little things complete your look.

Consider:

  • Simple jewelry

  • Rings

  • Layered necklaces

  • Hair accessories

  • A favorite pair of boots

  • A meaningful item that represents you

These small details help your photos feel personal and tell more of your story.

Where I Find Senior Portrait Style Inspiration

I love a style that feels like California editorial meets effortless everyday beauty.

Some of my favorite places for senior portrait outfit inspiration include:

  • Free People

  • Anthropologie

  • Alter'd State

  • Madewell

  • Reformation

  • Levi’s

  • Vintage shops and boutiques

I especially love outfits with:

  • earthy tones

  • soft neutrals

  • beautiful patterns

  • feminine details

  • interesting textures

  • pieces that allow you to move

A Few Things to Avoid

While I want your outfits to feel like you, a few tips help create timeless photographs:

  • Avoid large logos or distracting graphics

  • Avoid outfits that feel uncomfortable or restrictive

  • Avoid choosing something just because it is trendy if it doesn't feel like your style

  • Avoid bringing only one look—variety creates a much richer gallery

The Best Outfit Is the One You Feel Amazing In

The most beautiful images happen when you feel confident.

My job is not to turn you into someone else. My job is to capture the person you already are—the laugh, the personality, the confidence, and the excitement of this incredible chapter before graduation.

Together, we’ll create senior portraits that feel stylish, authentic, and completely yours.

Senior Portrait Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Senior Session

Planning senior portraits can feel exciting—and maybe a little overwhelming! From choosing outfits to figuring out where to take photos, I’m here to make the entire experience easy, relaxed, and fun.

Here are answers to some of the questions I hear most often.

When should we book senior portraits?

The best time to schedule senior portraits is typically during the summer before your senior year or early fall of your senior year. Many families book between June and October when we have beautiful golden-hour light, comfortable weather, and gorgeous seasonal locations throughout Sonoma County.

I recommend reaching out at least 2–3 months in advance, especially for popular fall dates, weekends, and coastal locations.

That said, if you’re a last-minute planner, don’t hesitate to ask! I’ll always do my best to accommodate your schedule.

How far in advance should we schedule?

Senior sessions are typically booked several months ahead, especially during the busy spring and fall seasons.

For the best selection of dates and locations, I recommend booking early. Once your date is reserved, we can take our time planning outfits, locations, and all the details that make your session feel personal.

What time of day are senior sessions?

Most senior portrait sessions take place during golden hour—the hour before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and flattering.

This beautiful natural light creates the dreamy, editorial look that is a signature of Diana Jex Photography.

Morning sessions may also be available depending on location and season.

How many outfits can I bring?

Most seniors choose 2–4 outfits depending on their session length.

I love creating variety by combining:

  • a casual everyday look

  • something elevated or dressy

  • an outfit that shows your personality

  • something meaningful to your hobbies or interests

We’ll talk through your wardrobe before your session so your outfits flow beautifully together.

What should I wear for my senior pictures?

The best outfit is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

I love helping seniors create a wardrobe that feels elevated but still authentic—think beautiful textures, layers, movement, and pieces that reflect your personal style.

Some of my favorite senior portrait looks include:

  • flowy dresses

  • denim

  • sweaters

  • boots

  • jackets

  • simple jewelry

  • timeless pieces with beautiful textures

Whether your style is classic, casual, bohemian, sporty, or fashion-forward, we’ll create a look that feels like you.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely! Pets are such an important part of our lives, and I love including them when it makes sense for your session and location.

Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

Can friends come to my senior session?

Senior portraits are designed to celebrate you, so I recommend keeping the session focused on your personality and story.

That said, if there is someone meaningful you would love to include for a few photos, we can absolutely discuss it. A best friend, sibling, or family member can sometimes add a fun and meaningful element.

Can my parents come?

Of course! Parents are always welcome.

Many parents choose to come along, especially if they are helping with outfits, transportation, or simply want to be part of this special milestone.

Some seniors prefer a little independence during their session, and that’s okay too. We’ll create an experience that feels comfortable for everyone.

Do you help with posing?

Yes! This is one of the biggest reasons seniors tell me they feel comfortable during their session.

You do not need modeling experience, and you do not need to know what to do in front of the camera.

I’ll guide you with:

  • natural posing

  • movement prompts

  • where to place your hands

  • flattering angles

  • genuine expressions

My goal is never to make you feel stiff or posed—it’s to help you feel confident and relaxed.

Where do senior sessions take place?

I photograph seniors throughout Sonoma County, Marin County, and Napa Valley.

Some favorite locations include:

  • Sonoma Coast beaches

  • golden fields

  • wildflower locations

  • vineyards

  • redwood forests

  • downtown urban areas

  • meaningful places that reflect your personality

Together we’ll choose a location that matches your style and the feeling you want your photos to have.

What happens if it rains?

California weather is usually beautiful, but occasionally Mother Nature has other plans!

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll discuss options including:

  • rescheduling

  • choosing a different location

  • adjusting timing

My goal is always to create the best possible experience and the most beautiful images.

Do you photograph sports, hobbies, or activities?

Absolutely.

Your senior portraits should tell your story.

Whether you’re an athlete, musician, dancer, artist, animal lover, outdoors enthusiast, or have another passion that defines you, I love incorporating those meaningful details.

These personal touches often become some of the most treasured images.

How long is a senior portrait session?

Senior sessions typically last about 1–2 hours, depending on the package you choose, number of outfits, and locations.

This gives us time to relax, explore, and create a variety of images without feeling rushed.

How many photos will I receive?

Each senior session includes a curated collection of professionally edited images.

The exact number depends on the package selected, but my goal is always to provide a gallery filled with variety—beautiful portraits, candid moments, and images that truly tell your story.

Do you offer prints and artwork?

Yes!

While digital images are wonderful for sharing, there is something special about seeing your senior portraits printed and displayed in your home.

I offer professional-quality prints and heirloom artwork designed to preserve this milestone for years to come.

I feel awkward in photos. Is a senior session still for me?

Absolutely.

In fact, many of my seniors tell me this before their session!

You don’t need to be outgoing, experienced in front of the camera, or feel like a model. My job is to create a relaxed environment where your personality naturally comes through.

The best photos happen when you stop worrying about posing and simply enjoy the experience.

Diana is an incredible family photographer! She did our first family photos 4 years ago when our son was 1, and we keep going back to her every year now because of how much we love our photos. She makes us all feel so comfortable and captures the most special candid moments. We cannot speak highly enough about her work!

Best Senior Portrait Locations in Sonoma County

Finding the Perfect Location to Tell Your Story

One of my favorite parts of senior photography is choosing a location that feels like you.

Your senior portraits should not just be beautiful—they should feel personal. The best locations reflect your personality, your style, and the season of life you’re stepping into.

After photographing families and seniors throughout Sonoma County for over 10 years, I’ve discovered some of my favorite places for creating natural, editorial-inspired senior portraits.

Whether you’re drawn to the California coastline, golden fields, charming downtown streets, or peaceful redwood forests, we’ll find a location that brings your vision to life.

Coastal Senior Portraits: Bodega Bay & The Sonoma Coast

For the senior who loves:
✨ effortless California style
✨ ocean views
✨ movement and wind-blown hair
✨ a relaxed, editorial feel

There is something timeless about senior portraits along the Sonoma Coast. The cliffs, beaches, grasses, and soft coastal light create a beautiful backdrop that feels both dramatic and natural.

Coastal sessions are especially beautiful for seniors who love:

  • flowy dresses

  • denim and boots

  • neutral tones

  • layers and textures

The ocean breeze adds natural movement and creates images that feel like they belong in a magazine while still feeling authentic.

Golden Fields & Wildflower Locations

For the senior who loves:
✨ Free People-inspired style
✨ earthy tones
✨ feminine textures
✨ romantic California landscapes

Sonoma County’s golden hills and seasonal wildflowers create some of my favorite senior portrait settings.

These locations are perfect for:

  • flowing dresses

  • soft sweaters

  • vintage-inspired outfits

  • warm neutral colors

The combination of golden light, open landscapes, and natural movement creates a timeless California look.

Urban Senior Portraits: Petaluma, Santa Rosa & Healdsburg

For the senior who loves:
✨ fashion-forward style
✨ downtown energy
✨ modern editorial portraits
✨ something unique

Not every senior wants a field or beach—and I love that!

Urban locations create a completely different feeling. Historic buildings, colorful walls, architecture, sidewalks, and city textures create a more editorial, fashion-inspired look.

These sessions are perfect for seniors who love:

  • trendy outfits

  • sneakers

  • leather jackets

  • denim

  • a more modern aesthetic

Redwood Forest Senior Portraits

For the senior who loves:
✨ nature
✨ adventure
✨ peaceful, timeless images
✨ an earthy California feel

There is nothing quite like photographing among the redwoods.

The soft filtered light, towering trees, and peaceful atmosphere create portraits that feel intimate and magical.

Redwood sessions are beautiful for seniors who want something:

  • natural

  • quiet

  • timeless

  • connected to the outdoors

Vineyard & Sonoma Wine Country Senior Portraits

For the senior who loves:
✨ elegant style
✨ classic California beauty
✨ sophisticated portraits

Sonoma County vineyards offer beautiful seasonal colors, rows of vines, rolling hills, and a relaxed wine-country feel.

These locations pair beautifully with:

  • dresses

  • neutral colors

  • classic outfits

  • elevated styling

How We Choose Your Senior Portrait Location

The perfect location depends on more than just a pretty view.

When planning your session, we’ll consider:

Your personality
Are you adventurous, romantic, playful, classic, or fashion-forward?

Your wardrobe
Some outfits shine at the beach, while others are made for urban streets or golden fields.

The season
Sonoma County changes beautifully throughout the year, and I’ll help choose locations that look their best during your session.

The feeling you want your photos to have
Do you want your images to feel:

  • editorial?

  • natural?

  • adventurous?

  • romantic?

  • modern?

Together, we'll create a session that feels uniquely yours.
