What to Wear for an At-Home Family Photo Session
There’s something so special about photographing a family at home.
Instead of asking everyone to sit still and “look at the camera,” an at-home session gives us room to slow down, play, cuddle, make breakfast, wander through the backyard, or simply be together. Your home becomes part of your family's story—and I want your clothing to feel just as natural.

For an at-home family session, my biggest styling advice is simple:
Keep it comfortable, casual, and true to your family.
You don't need to dress up. You don't need everyone in perfectly coordinated outfits. And you definitely don't need to buy an entirely new wardrobe.
The goal is to create photographs that feel warm, relaxed, organic, and timeless.
Start With Your Favorite Pieces
Before opening 17 browser tabs and panic-ordering outfits, take a look in your own closet.
What do you actually love wearing?
Maybe it's your favorite linen dress, a pair of relaxed jeans, a soft sweater, or a simple button-down. Start there and build the rest of the family's outfits around it.
I especially love when families look coordinated without looking matched. Everyone can wear different colors and silhouettes while still feeling connected through a similar overall palette.
For an at-home session, think:
Soft neutrals
Cream and ivory
Warm beige and camel
Olive and sage
Soft browns
Muted blues
Terracotta and rust
Denim
Soft gray
Natural greens
Earth tones are especially beautiful because they work naturally with both indoor spaces and outdoor gardens and backyards.
Think Texture, Not Matching
One of my favorite ways to make family photographs feel visually interesting is through texture.
Linen, cotton, denim, knits, gauze, corduroy, and soft woven fabrics all photograph beautifully. They add dimension without distracting from the people in the photograph.
For example, Mom might wear a flowy linen dress, Dad could wear a relaxed linen button-down with jeans, and the kids might wear cotton dresses, overalls, or simple knit pieces.
Everything feels connected—but nobody looks like they're wearing a uniform.
Current linen pieces are particularly easy to find at retailers like Quince, Madewell, J.Crew, H&M and Gap.
Linen is especially nice for an at-home session because it has that effortless, slightly lived-in quality that works beautifully with a documentary-inspired approach.
Let the Kids Be Comfortable
This one is important.
If your toddler normally lives in leggings, don't put them in an uncomfortable outfit they've never worn before.
If your little guy wants to run around barefoot, let him.
If your daughter loves a dress that twirls, even better.
At-home sessions are designed around movement and connection. Kids will be climbing on the couch, running through the yard, cuddling with you, playing with the dog, and generally doing all the things that make them them.
Clothing that allows them to move freely will always photograph better than something they're constantly tugging, adjusting, or complaining about.
For kids, I love simple cotton and linen pieces from H&M Kids, Gap Kids, Quince Kids, and Zara Kids.

What About Shoes?
At home, shoes are completely optional!
Bare feet can actually make the photographs feel even more relaxed and authentic, especially for little ones.
If we head outside, simple sandals, sneakers, boots, or bare feet can all work depending on the setting.
I wouldn't stress too much about shoes. They're rarely the most important part of the photograph.
What to Avoid
There aren't many hard rules, but I generally recommend staying away from anything that competes with the people in the photograph.
I'd skip:
Large logos
Character graphics
Neon or very bright colors
Everyone wearing exactly the same color
Very bold, busy patterns
Extremely stiff or uncomfortable clothing
One subtle pattern can be beautiful. If one person wears a small floral, stripe, or check, keep the rest of the outfits fairly simple.
And don't worry about wrinkles! Linen wrinkles. That's part of the charm. A little texture and movement often makes photographs feel more natural.
Dressing for Both Inside & Outside
This is one of the reasons I love at-home sessions so much—we can move between different spaces throughout your home.
You might start in the bedroom cuddling with the kids, move into the kitchen for a little everyday chaos, and then head outside to the backyard while the evening light comes in.
Because of that, I love outfits that work in both environments.
Think layers.
A cardigan, oversized button-down, denim jacket, lightweight sweater, or linen shirt can easily be added or removed as we move around.
And if your home has a lot of color or pattern in the décor, choosing softer clothing tones can help keep the photographs visually calm.

A Few Easy Outfit Formulas
If you're still not sure where to start, here are a few combinations I love:
For Mom:Flowy linen or cotton dress + simple sandals + minimal jewelry
For Dad:Relaxed linen button-down + denim or neutral pants + barefoot or simple sneakers
For Little Girls:Simple cotton or linen dress + cardigan or denim layer
For Little Boys:Soft tee or linen shirt + relaxed pants, shorts, or overalls
For Everyone:Cream + olive + denim + warm beige
The current linen collections at Quince are particularly easy to mix and match. For example, their linen dresses and relaxed men's linen shirts make great starting pieces for a neutral family palette.
Quince European Linen Button Front Dress
$64.00•Light, breathable linen dress with a button front, perfect for warm days.
Quince Men's European Linen Shirt
$42.00•Classic linen shirt in a relaxed fit, ideal for casual or dressy looks.
Quince Kids Linen Dress
$39.90•Comfortable linen dress for kids, suitable for summer wear.
H&M Kids Linen Set
$27.99•Easy-to-wear linen set for kids, great for play or outings.
Most Importantly: Be Yourselves
This is the part I care about most.
Your family doesn't need to look like it belongs in a catalog.
I want your photographs to look and feel like your family on a really good day at home.
Wear the dress you love. Let your toddler go barefoot. Leave the hair a little messy. Let the kids run around the backyard. Bring the family dog into the photographs. Curl up on the couch.
Those little in-between moments are often my favorites.
Your home, your people, your story.
The clothing is simply there to complement it.
A Few Favorite Places to Shop
If you do want to shop for something new, these are some of my favorite places to look for relaxed, neutral, family-session-friendly pieces:
Quince — beautiful linen, cotton, and relaxed basics for the whole family
Madewell — relaxed denim, dresses, sweaters, and easy everyday pieces
J.Crew — classic linen, cotton, and timeless pieces
H&M — affordable linen and cotton options for adults and kids
Gap — great basics and neutral pieces for the entire family
Zara Kids — simple, modern pieces for little ones
Abercrombie & Fitch — relaxed linen and elevated casual pieces for adults and older kids
Current 2026 styling trends are also leaning heavily toward breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, linen, and versatile pieces that transition easily from summer into fall, which works beautifully for this kind of session.
